Inspired by the amazing West Side Market, I set out to make a market bag as a gift for her. I'm very happy with the results and thought I'd share the "pattern."
West Side Market Bag
Materials:
Needles:
Size 7 Double Pointed Needles
Size 7 16” circulars
Size 9 16” or 24” circulars
Size 10 1/2 16" or 24" circulars
A note on the multiple needle sizes: I wanted the bottom of the bag in a tighter knit so it would hold up to heavy market items. The body is on size 9 needles, allowing for some stretch. The linen stitch at the top of the bag creates a tight woven "fabric." It's possible to to do the top of the bag in size 9. It will not have as large an opening.
Directions:
Bottom:
-with smaller double pointed needles, Cast on 4 stitches, divide stitches over 4 needles, join being careful not to twist
-Row 1: kfb into every stitch (8 stitches)
-Row 2: k
-Row 3: repeat row 1 (16 stitches total)
-Row 4: k
-Row 5: (kfb, k until last stitch on needle, kfb) over each of the 4 needles
Repeat rows 4 & 5 until you have 30 stitches on each needle (120 stitches total)
Knit 4 rows
Switch to size 9, knit 4 rows
Body:
-Row 1: (k2tog, yo) throughout round
-Row 2: k
Repeat until body measures 10”
Switch to size 10 1/2 , work in linen stitch
-Row 1: (k1, bring yarn to front, slip 1, bring yarn to back) repeat until last 2 stitches, k2tog (119 stitches total.
-Row 2: (bring yarn to front, slip 1, bring yarn to back, k1) throughout round
-Row 3: (k1, bring yarn to front, slip 1, bring yarn to back) throughout round
repeat rows 2 & 3 until top of the bag measure 1 1/2 inches
Bind off, leaving 4 sections of 8 live stitches (evenly spaced)
Working with one set of 8 stitches:
Row 1: (k1, bring yarn to front, slip 1, bring yarn to back)
Row 2 (wrong side): (p1, bring yarn to back, slip 1, bring yarn to front)
repeat rows 1 & 2 until strap is desired length. Attach to second set of 8 stitches. Repeat. Weave in ends.

OH that is a super cute bag!
Thanks for the pattern of this lovely shopping bag! Just the right thing for the upcoming birthday of a dear friend :)
Love this bag! Just running into one problem- What method did you use to attach the handles? Thanks!
EMarific - I'm glad you are enjoying the pattern. I joined the handles using the kitchener stitch. Happy Knitting!
I really enjoyed making the bag. I did have two problems though - I couldn't find a bind off that worked well with the linen stitch and when attaching the straps they also seemed to have "holes" where there were slipped stitches with the linen stitch. I did use the kitchener stitch when attaching but it doesn't look as "seamless" as yours. Any ideas? Thanks again for a great bag idea.
