As a little girl, my mom offered to teach me many things. She offered to teach me to cook, to sew, to play piano. I had my own ideas. I did not want to learn ANY of these things. I've always had a stubborn streak and refused to learn.
As an adult, I've regretted these decisions. I've developed the ability to cook and still wish I could play piano.
This past month, my mom gave me my first sewing lesson. Today, I took out my new (gently used) sewing machine and got to work.
I was able to get it out of the box, get thread onto the bobbin and thread the needle.
My first stitches did not look great:
After closer inspection, I realized the needle I was using was bent. Got the needle changed and went to work.
Today I made a knitting WIP (work-in-progress) project bag. It's based on a drawstring bag used to pack shoes when traveling. This one is 17 inches wide and 15 inches tall. It is big enough to fit a medium sized project (sweater).
Mom, it took me a while to recognize the usefulness of the skills you offered to teach me. I'm excited to be getting to them now! Better late than never.
